Nitrate occurs naturally in the environment, but elevated levels in drinking water can be a concern. The federal drinking water standard for nitrate is 10 mg/L, and the EPA recommends that private well owners test their water for nitrate annually. 

St. Croix County will be holding a free nitrate screening next week, this is a great opportunity to check your water!

Just bring a sample of your drinking water to the St. Croix County Services Center in New Richmond on Thursday, September 10, anytime between 1:00 and 5:00 p.m.

• About 1 cup of your drinking water in a clean container (mason jars work great)

• Have a treatment system? Bring two samples, one pre and one post treatment we can screen them both and give you an idea of how it is performing
